Government Contemplates Handing Over MTNL Operations to BSNL

The Government Of India is exploring the possibility of transferring the operations of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) through an operational agreement. This alternative is being considered instead of a full-fledged merger, with a final decision expected within a month.
Rather than merging MTNL with BSNL, the government is contemplating an agreement that would see BSNL taking over MTNL's operations. A source familiar with the matter has indicated that this approach is under serious consideration, aiming to streamline operations and improve efficiency without the complexities of a merger.
An operational handover is likely to be simpler and quicker than a full merger, avoiding the regulatory and administrative hurdles typically associated with mergers. BSNL's management of MTNL's operations could lead to better coordination and optimization of resources, potentially improving service quality and financial performance.
This approach allows BSNL to leverage its strengths and expertise in managing telecommunications operations on a larger scale, while MTNL can benefit from BSNL’s established infrastructure and operational efficiencies.
