Microsoft Research, in collaboration with Xbox game studio Ninja Theory, has introduced a new artificial intelligence model called Muse, designed to generate gameplay visuals and predict controller inputs. This technology, which represents a major advancement in AI in gaming, is expected to have significant implications for video game development and preservation.
Muse has been trained using over one billion images and controller actions from the 2020 game Bleeding Edge. This extensive training allows the model to demonstrate a deep understanding of 3D game worlds and physics, reacting to player interactions. Microsoft has dubbed Muse the first of a new category of AI, termed World and Human Action Models (WHAM). The innovation signals a new wave in the gaming industry with AI systems capable of understanding complex gameplay dynamics.
The prototype, however, is still in its early stages, with limitations including the generation of low-resolution visuals at 300x180 pixels and a real-time demonstration that ran at just 10 frames per second. Despite these constraints, Microsoft researchers see the model as a step forward in AI's potential for next-gen gaming and could pave the way for gaming development tools that simplify processes and enhance creative flexibility.
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, suggested that Muse could play a key role in game design and game preservation, enabling classic titles to be playable on modern hardware without the need for the original engine. The technology could also be a valuable asset in game development, speeding up workflows and allowing for faster prototyping and iteration.
Amid concerns in the gaming industry about AI replacing human developers—especially following widespread 2024 layoffs—Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews emphasized that Muse is not intended to replace content creators. Instead, Matthews highlighted how the model could assist developers by streamlining the video game development process.
Microsoft plans to introduce interactive AI gaming experiences via Copilot Labs, though no specific timeline has been set. Xbox studios will have autonomy in deciding how to integrate generative AI into their projects.
