Deep Research works by breaking down complex queries into smaller, manageable tasks, making it capable of handling a wide range of research challenges
OpenAI has come up with a new tool called Deep Research, designed to assist with multi-step online research tasks. This new offering aims to simplify complex research projects across various disciplines, including scientific literature reviews and UI/UX data analysis. With its ability to automate routine research, Deep Research can save users significant time by processing web-based resources, uploaded documents, and even images to generate detailed reports complete with citations.
Deep Research works by breaking down complex queries into smaller, manageable tasks, making it capable of handling a wide range of research challenges. It uses a combination of a browser layer and Python tools to sift through public websites, PDFs, and images, continuously adjusting its research plan to ensure accuracy. OpenAI’s o3 model, optimized for search and synthesis, powers the architecture behind the tool. During tests, Deep Research demonstrated a 26.6% accuracy rate on a test of over 3,000 expert-level questions, significantly outperforming the DeepSeek R1 model's 9.4% score.

Despite its promising results in automating routine research, Deep Research still faces challenges with more complex queries. Notably, it has a tendency to "hallucinate," meaning it can generate inaccurate or fabricated information when it struggles with context. This makes manual verification of data still necessary for users. OpenAI has acknowledged this limitation and emphasized the importance of human oversight to ensure accuracy.
OpenAI notes that Deep Research is particularly suited for professionals in fields like finance, science, policy, and engineering, where in-depth, accurate research is crucial. The tool’s ability to generate detailed reports quickly, while providing citations, is a significant step toward automating knowledge work.
Currently, Deep Research is available to ChatGPT Pro users with a limit of 100 queries per month, but OpenAI plans to extend access to additional paid accounts in the coming months.
