Dell plans to use circular design in order to improve sustainability

The tech giant Dell has unveiled a circular design for its servers and consumer goods in an effort to improve sustainability around the board. The strategy includes concepts for PC refurbishing, recycling, intelligent telemetry, modular design, and emission reduction. In 2022, circular design was presented as a sustainable PC design concept, building upon the principles of Concept Luna.

The Concept Luna was announced back in 2022 as a design concept for a sustainable PC with modular design, which makes it easy to repair or recycle to help reduce the estimated 54 million metric tons of e-waste produced globally each year.

By incorporating circular design in PCs, Dell will make use of more modular components, and reduces the use of adhesive and screws, making it more easy to access the internals of the device for easy repair or upgrade process, which also extends the life snap of the product. By implementing these design choices, Dell will soon launch monitors with serviceable displays, and more.

Similarly, to reduce carbon emissions, the company will use energy-efficient components and sustainable materials. The company will also increase the use of recycled steel, and recycled aluminium, and will soon start to use recycled cobalt for laptop batteries in 2024. On top of that, Dell is using AI, machine learning, and predictive analysis techniques to extend the life of various components used on the PC.

Dell will also start offering services, making it easy to return and recycle products that have reached end-of-life and offering resources to promote accessible repair. This is said to help the company harvest components for reuse, refurbishment and recycling process.
