Apple plans bold overhaul of iOS, macOS, and iPadOS

Inspired by Apple’s visionOS, the redesign will feature rounder app icons, improved gesture controls, and enhanced visual depth with updated shadows and window effects, aiming to create a more cohesive and modern user interface across devices

Apple is set to introduce a major overhaul to its iOS, iPadOS, and macOS operating systems, heralding the biggest visual revamp in over ten years. The upcoming updates—iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16—are expected to feature a complete revamp of system icons, menus, and other design elements. This update aims to streamline navigation and create a more cohesive and unified user experience across Apple’s ecosystem of devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

According to reports, this redesign is poised to be the most significant visual change since iOS 7 debuted in 2013 and macOS 11 (Big Sur) launched in 2020. Sources familiar with the plans suggest that the redesign is intended to modernize the user interface and encourage users to upgrade from older devices.

The new look will draw heavy inspiration from Apple’s visionOS, the operating system used in its Vision Pro headset, which could mean rounder app icons, improved gesture controls, and enhanced visual depth, thanks to updated shadows and window effects.

Seamless user interface on top priority for Apple

The changes are also expected to focus on making the software more intuitive and user-friendly. Apple plans to create a more consistent interface across its various devices, ensuring that the iPhone, iPad, and Mac provide a seamless experience.

In addition to the visual updates, the operating systems will reportedly include deeper integration of Apple’s AI capabilities, bringing enhanced Apple Intelligence features that will be embedded into system functions, further improving the user experience.

This overhaul comes at a time when Apple is looking to refresh its product lineup, following a 1% dip in iPhone sales during the recent holiday quarter. Moreover, the delay in the rollout of an advanced, AI-powered version of Siri has raised concerns about Apple’s position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

The redesign may mark a strategic shift, with a focus on improving the user interface rather than solely emphasizing AI advancements. Apple is expected to showcase these changes at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2025, and if accurate, this overhaul could represent the most significant transformation of Apple’s operating systems in over a decade.
