Google Chrome to Introduce Fingerprint Authentication for Passwords

Up until now, users could only save passkeys to Google Password Manager on Android. While these passkeys can be used on other devices, users need to scan a QR code using your Android device to provide passwordless login.

Google Chrome is testing a new feature that requires users to enter PIN or use fingerprint or face authentication to fill in passwords. To enable the feature, users will have to install Google Chrome’s Canary build from the Play Store. Once done, launch the app and type “chrome://flags” in the address bar and on the page that appears, find and enable the toggle named “#biometric-auth-identity-check“.

Thus, Google is making it easy for people to ‘forget’ passwords by enhancing the way users can use them in Chrome. The company is making it simpler to sign in without passwords across various devices enabling users to create a Google Password Manager PIN to store and access passkeys on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android devices.

Passkeys are the new standard for security, allowing users to just sign-in without having to punch-in passwords on every website and devices. They are safer than passwords and easier to use, letting users use fingerprint, face or screen lock to securely sign in to apps and websites.

Since the functionality is currently available on the Canary version of Chrome for Android, an experimental Chrome build for those who want to try out new features, it might take some time for the option to appear on the stable build.

As per the company, the new feature is currently in beta testing on ChromeOS, and support for iOS is on the way.

Last month, Google added a bunch of new features to Chrome to desktop that includes Google Lens integration, a Tab compare feature and AI powered history search
