Government issues a fresh guideline cautioning against dangerous CCTV brands

An alert advocating caution over CCTV brands vulnerable to security breaches was released by the Indian government. In order to reduce the risk of data leaks and cyberattacks, various ministries have been advised to stay away from such brands. This action was motivated by worries about the security implications of surveillance technology and was in keeping with public procurement requirements to protect the integrity of CCTV and IoT devices.

“While these surveillance technologies undoubtedly offer a range of benefits and are valuable tools for monitoring and security, they also raise certain concerns and risks. Some of the growing risks associated with CCTV systems include data security, privacy breach, hacking, and cyberattack etc,” the government said in the advisory issued on March 11.

Many ministries and departments are concerned regarding the security implications linked with the deployment of CCTV cameras and hardware testing of such devices.

Also, MeitY advised the ministries to adhere to the procurement guidelines, particularly the public procurement order (Make in India), 2017 and the electronics and information technology goods (requirement of compulsory registration) order, 2021.
