Woman suffers 80% burns after her laptop catches fire
By MYBRANDBOOK
An IT employee was seriously injured after her laptop exploded in Mekavaripalle in B. Koduru zone of YSR district, in Andhra Pradesh. Sumalatha, employed with Bengaluru-based Magic Solutions, was charging her laptop to work when it suddenly caught fire and exploded.
The laptop was burnt due to a short circuit as she was working on it while plugging it in for continuous power. She was badly hurt when the explosion sparked the fire, and the bed caught fire as well.
It has been suspected that Sumalatha might have fallen unconscious when the gadget exploded. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Kadapa. As per the doctors, she has reportedly suffered 70-80 percent burns. Currently, her condition seems to be stable.
She was shifted to a local hospital and from there to RIMS-GGH at Kadapa. Later, she was taken to another hospital in Tirupati. B Koduru police SI Nasrin said a probe has been initiated into the incident. Though the family members suspected an electrical short-circuit had caused the explosion, overheating of the gadget’s battery might have led to the blast.
During summers, power outages, voltage fluctuations, sun exposure, and other factors can affect laptop performances. Laptop batteries can explode because of a normal-use process called thermal runaway. Thermal runaway can lead to an explosion when there is a problem causing the battery to produce more heat than it can handle.
