Microsoft's Co-founder Bill Gates on Saturday congratuled India-American economist Abhijeet Banerjee for winning the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.
The 58-year-old Kolkata-born economist is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
It is really a proud moment for India and Indian, as Abhijit Banerjee has been recognised for the experimental approach to alleviate poverty and winning the Nobel Prize. But it is completely wrong to see this from a political perspective, every Indian should be proud of this achievement. He won the coveted award along with his French-American wife Esther Duflo and American economist Michael Kremer "for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.
Earlier, Abhijit Banerjee, his wife French-American wife Esther Duflo and another American economist Michael Kremer jointly won the 2019 Nobel Economics Prize. Taking to Twitter, Bill Gates congratulated all the winners and said he learned a lot from their work to understand the "complexities of the lives of the world's poorest people".
"Congrats to Esther Duflo, Abhijit Banerjee, and Michael Kremer for winning this year's @NobelPrize in economics. I've learned a lot from their pioneering work to better understand the complexities of the lives of the world's poorest people," Bill Gates tweeted.
"The research conducted by this year's Laureates has considerably improved our ability to fight global poverty. In just two decades, their new experiment-based approach has transformed development economics, which is now a flourishing field of research," the Nobel committee said in a statement on November 19.
