Instagram users report surge in violent and disturbing content

While Meta has not issued an official statement regarding the issue, the problem could stem from a potential malfunction in the platform’s content moderation system

Several Instagram users across the world have reported seeing a sudden increase in violent and NSFW (not safe for work) content appearing in their feeds, even for those with Sensitive Content Control enabled. The unexpected influx of disturbing videos, including fight scenes and explicit material, has raised concerns among users who took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their frustrations.

While Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has not issued an official statement regarding the issue, the problem could stem from a potential malfunction in the platform’s content moderation system. Instagram relies on AI technology to scan and limit sensitive content visibility. If this system fails, it could allow such material to be shown to a broader audience.

An alternative explanation is a possible change in Instagram’s algorithm. A recent update may have inadvertently prioritized certain types of content, leading to the surge in violent and disturbing videos. Meta has not clarified how many users were affected.

Users express shock and concern

One user expressed his surprise, saying, "In the past few hours, my Instagram Reels feed has suddenly started showing violent or disturbing videos out of nowhere. Feels random. Is anyone else experiencing this? Or is it just me?" Others shared similar experiences, with one user writing, "All I'm seeing is sensitive and violent content every few scrolls????"

Another user shared a more specific example, noting they encountered multiple Reels showing fight scenes and a bodycam video involving a fatal police shooting. Others reported similar experiences, with several claiming to see frequent violent content while browsing the platform.
