Ola Cabs exits Google Maps by introducing Ola Maps

Ola introduces in-house navigation system. Bhavish Aggarwal , CEO of Ola claimed that the move will enable Ola Cabs to save INR 100 Cr annually in charges payable to Google.

Ola Cabs has transitioned to using its in-house online maps called Ola Maps. Ola Maps will also “soon” add more features such as street view, NeRFs, indoor images, 3D maps, drone maps, among others. In addition, with the roll out of the Move OS 4 software platform for its electric two-wheelers.

Cloud services provided by Krutrim AI will also have application programming interface (APIs) for Ola Maps, he added. The move to shift to the in-house navigation platform comes six months after Ola Electric commercially launched Ola Maps in January this year.

Krutrim AI, founded by Aggarwal, comes after it opened up its cloud infrastructure and cloud services for business. Graphics processing units (GPU)-as-a-service model for developers and startups to benefit from. This will help businesses build products without depending on western cloud solutions. The firm has a data centre in Bengaluru, with more centres set to be established in multiple other locations, based on availability and demand.

The decision comes at a time when the company had moved its entire workload out of Azure. In May, the Ola Cabs founder had said that the shift was in response to Microsoft-owned LinkedIn pulling down his post that termed the usage of the pronoun ‘they’ as an “illness”.

The development also comes close on the heels of the mobility platform shoring up its ecommerce play on the back of its partnership with Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Last month, the startup was said to be planning to roll out its grocery delivery through the network.
