Apple to move key iPad engineering resources to Vietnam
By MYBRANDBOOK
Apple is reportedly allocating product development resources for iPad to Vietnam. It is working with China's BYD, a key iPad assembler, to move new product introduction resources to Vietnam. It also becomes the first time the company has shifted NPI resources to Vietnam for such a core device.
Engineering verification for test production of an iPad model will start around mid-February and the model will be available in the second half of next year.
Apple suppliers including Luxshare and Foxconn also invested in the Southeast Asian country earlier this year to further diversify production away from China.
BYD became the inaugural Apple supplier to assist the U.S. tech giant in relocating iPad assembly to Vietnam in 2022, particularly focusing on entry-level models rather than the premium iPad Pro, as reported by Nikkei. This reallocation of NPI (New Product Introduction) engineering resources involves significant commitments from both the tech company and its suppliers, including the deployment of engineers and investments in laboratory equipment for testing new features and functions.
While the majority of Apple's NPI activities occur in China, leveraging the country's extensive experience in hardware manufacturing, geopolitical uncertainties have prompted the company to reconsider this strategy. Additionally, Apple has plans to shift some NPI processes for the iPhone to India, as reported earlier by Nikkei Asia.
