CERT-In warns of prevalent cyberscams and urges vigilance

India's cyber security organization, CERT-In, observed "Cyber Jaagrookta Diwas” to increase public awareness of cyber frauds. They issued a warning about frauds such as updating bank account information or KYC using dubious connections. In order to obtain personal information, cyber crooks frequently take advantage by luring with free gifts offers, threatening to close accounts, or blocking debit cards. Users were advised not to give up their personal information.
This is the most-common scam, where criminals ask users to update their bank details on a certain platform. They may also ask for information like Aadhaar, PAN or other details to update their bank account. Remember, no bank official will ever ask for your personal details.
Another common scam is where criminals share links on WhatsApp or SMS asking users to click on it to update their bank account details. These cyber criminals often warn account holders that if they do not update their details, they may lose access to their account or their debit/credit/ATM card may be blocked.
This is a scam that all telecom service providers including Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone have warned their users multiple times about. In this, criminals ask mobile users to share their important personal information to update KYC. They create a scare that if the same is not done then the users’ mobile number or bank account will get blocked.
The greed of free gift coupon codes or offers expiring soon is another dangerous scam in which internet users in the country have lost money. Here criminals try to play on users’ greed by telling them that they will lose the chance to get a free gift.
Debit or ATM card will be blocked is another most-common scam used by criminals to dupe innocent people. Here they are asked to share their personal information like Aadahaar, bank details, phone number, date of birth, PAN number and more to ensure that their ATM or debit card is not blocked. In some cases, criminals even manage to ask ATM/debit card pin.
