UGC says online degrees to be treated on par with regular courses

According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), the degrees obtained through distance and online learning from recognised institutions would be treated on par with those offered through regular mode.

The commission highlighted the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Programmes and Online Programmes Regulations 2020 which specifies, “Degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate level in conformity with UGC notification on Specification of Degrees, 2014 and post graduate diplomas awarded through Open and Distance training mode and/or Online mode by Higher Educational Institutions, recognised by the Commission under these regulations, shall be treated as equivalent to the corresponding awards of the Degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate level and post graduate diplomas offered through conventional mode.”

In its earlier notifications, UGC has stated that Open Distance Learning should be treated as the corresponding degrees of regular institutions. However, certain degrees and courses require field experience and ground-level exposure. A list of programmes was prohibited by the commission to be pursued under ODL and online mode. These programmes include Engineering, Medical, Physiotherapy, and various other programmes.

UGC's announcement will ensure that people continue to opt for degrees through online and distance learning modes in the future as well. Many education institutes conduct ODL and online courses even without authorization. Students are advised to enroll in the right courses that are provided by recognised educational institutions.
