I-T Dept raids offices of Chinese mobile firms in India

The Income Tax department is conducting searches on leading Chinese mobile companies across the country. The search operations were conducted based on intelligence inputs of concealed income and tax evasion.

Searches are ongoing at several manufacturing units, godowns, and corporate offices of Chinese mobile phone companies like Xiaomi and Oppo. Raids have been conducted in properties related to Oppo in Tamil Nadu, including its office in Perungudi and a manufacturing unit for cellphone parts in Kancheepuram, along with 15 premises of Oppo, OnePlus and Xiaomi in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

The smartphone companies were allegedly violating rules and norms to evade taxes and were on the radar of several probe agencies, including the I-T Department. Previously, some Chinese firms which were allegedly running mobile loan application and transport business, were raided by the government agencies.

A Xiaomi spokesperson said that as a responsible company, “We give paramount importance to ensuring that we are compliant with all Indian laws. As an invested partner in India, we are fully cooperating with authorities to ensure they have all the required information."
