Satellite internet Starlink is now as fast as regular broadband

As per Speedtest found that, Starlink's internet speeds are fast approaching those of regular broadband. Starlink had an average Q2 download speed of 97.23 Mbps, meaning it took about a minute to download a film.

Elon Musk's company had the fastest satellite internet speeds, beating HughesNet and Viasat. Now it has close to 90,000 active users has almost superseded the speed of traditional satellite internet.

Elon Musk's space-based network able to beam internet down from 1,650 satellites in orbit, recorded an average download speed of 97.23 megabits per second (Mbps) in the second quarter of 2021.

Starlink wasn't too far off the average download speed for US fixed broadband providers. They averaged 115.22 Mbps during the second quarter, Speedtest said in its report.

The report says, Starlink's median latency, 45 milliseconds (ms) is close to fixed broadband's 14 ms. Low latency is vital for voice and video calling, gaming, and live content streaming. By comparison, Viasat, 630 ms, and HughesNet, 724 ms, are almost unusable for these purposes.

Starlink uses low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations, flying above us at a relatively close 550 to 1,200 kilometers (km), while HughesNet and Viasat have far higher geosynchronous orbits of about 35,000km.

As of now, Starlink offers beta services in 11 countries including the US, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Europe. SpaceX’s goal is to launch satellites around 42,000 Starlink to Orbit Earth low by mid-2027.
