Bharti Airtel may offer 5G in metro or larger cities first

As per news source, Gopal Vittal, CEO of Bharti Airtel, has confirmed that for 5G the existing core and radio equipment of the mobile broadband network need not to be replaced. This will help the company to save a lot of capex spends on deploying 5G.

He also said that in the short-term Airtel will be looking to rollout 5G in the metro or large cities of the country. The reason behind it is at present the price of the 5G devices is very high and a large population of the country still operate 4G devices.

As per industry analysts, Reliance Jio can be at the advantageous position by rolling out 5G along with its low-cost 5G smartphone in partnership with Google. According to Vittal, Airtel will not enter the device subsidy game as the company feels it is a value-destructive strategy.

It is worth noting that Airtel has already proved the claims made by Vittal for 5G. The telco has tested its 5G network live in Hyderabad using the 1800 MHz spectrum. Airtel found that the network offered 10x more speed and latency compared to 4G. During the test, a 1GB movie file could be downloaded in a matter of seconds whereas it generally takes minutes to download it in a 4G network.
