Qualcomm and Google join hands to work on 5G applications

Qualcomm Technologies has announced to work with Google to empower applications for 5Gby enhancing developer APIs in Android Q. This announcement was made at  the Google I/O on Tuesday.

The company said as the Android ecosystem is rapidly transitioning to 5G, with virtually all major Android OEMs planning to launch flagship 5G smartphonesbased on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform, this partnership would help developers to build their apps for the 5G ecosystem.

The next release of Android, Android Q, is designed to allow applications to detect the performance of 5G connectivity on Android devices, enabling developers to create new experiences that take advantage of 5G connectivity and its unique capabilities – including multi-gigabit speeds and ultra-low latency.

Android developers can unlock transformative experiences in premium 5G devices made with Qualcomm Technologies’ 5G products, including near-instant access to cloud services, multiplayer cloud gaming, shopping and navigation with AR, and real-time video collaboration. Through the exposure of new network performance information such as 5G throughput estimation, developers will be able to utilize 5G performance to re-energize their existing applications with superior quality video, audio and responsiveness, while opening doors to the next wave of breakthrough applications and 5G-enabled experiences.

“4G enabled a new wave of disruptive mobile applications and services, essentially serving as the foundation for the smartphone revolution, and we believe 5G will be even more transformative,” said Francesco Grilli, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “5G is here with networks and devices launching across the globe in 2019, and now it’s time for application developers to bring 5G to life by reimagining what is possible with 5G multi-gigabit connectivity and blazing-fast responsiveness.”

“Android is the platform for innovation, proven by the speed with which it is able to embrace technological advances like 5G,” said Bob Borchers, vice president of marketing, platforms and ecosystems, Google. “We’re excited to collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies at Google I/O to support developers and the larger ecosystem in unlocking 5G’s full potential.”

Qualcomm Technologies and Google will be presenting details at Google I/O on how developers can start creating network applications that can take advantage of 5G. Developers can start today creating network-aware applications that take advantage of 5G by visiting the Android Developer site for more information about the Connectivity Manager.
