Voice erupts to ban Chinese Social Media and e-tail apps

As China is continues to block India’s efforts to take action against  terrorists in Pakistan. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated  Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM) has written to PM Narendra Modi for banning Chinese social media and e-commerce apps, like TikTok and Helo, which have recently become popular.

The letter suggests,  We also need to ensure that Indian startups are not hurt by such Chinese companies which are flush with cash and would harm the Indian startup ecosystem. ByteDance owns popular short-video and social media platforms such as TikTok and Helo, which are popular among India's teenagers.

“Why should we let the Chinese take advantage of us and track user activities, among other things, when they continue to back Pakistan. We have requested the PM, saying we should first ban these Chinese apps to be downloaded from Google Play or Apple’s App Store and then bring a clear set of regulations that they must adhere to if they want to have a presence here,” Ashwani Mahajan, national co-convener, SJM, told TOI over the phone. Mahajan is expecting to meet key officials of various ministries like IT, finance and commerce.

According to app data platform App Annie, TikTok is currently ranked number 1 by daily Google Play downloads for overall apps in India. It has also been ranked in the top 10 in India since the middle of 2018. Bytedance is the first Chinese internet company and the owner of the wildly popular short-form video app, is now valued at more than $75 billion following a new round of investment. The founder is Zhang Yiming.

TikTok and Helo said they are committed to respecting local laws and regulations as well as maintaining a safe and positive in-app environment for their users in India. “There is no basis for the factually incorrect claims raised by certain groups recently. We treat the safety and security of our user data very seriously. Moreover, we have robust measures to protect users against misuse, including easy reporting mechanisms that enable users and law enforcement to report content that violates our terms of use and community guidelines,” said a ByteDance spokesperson.
