Microsoft set to unveil Xbox handheld console, new Xbox series in development

Insiders suggest the device will feature a hybrid system, combining Xbox OS with Windows for an optimized gaming experience, similar to Valve’s SteamOS, reflecting Microsoft's focus on enhanced portability and gaming ecosystem

Microsoft is reportedly gearing up to launch an Xbox-branded handheld gaming device later this year. This handheld console is the result of a collaboration with an external company, likely one with a strong background in handheld technology, such as MSI, Lenovo, or ASUS. The device, codenamed "Keenan," is said to resemble the distinctive Xbox design, ensuring that it aligns with the brand's identity.

The news, initially broken by Windows Central, indicates that the handheld console could hit the market in 2025, assuming development proceeds smoothly. The popularity of handheld gaming has surged in recent years, with numerous companies venturing into this space. Microsoft's entry into the market suggests the company is looking to capitalize on the growing demand for portable gaming options.

Microsoft testing waters with handheld

Although Microsoft has previously expressed interest in a dedicated Xbox handheld, Xbox head Phil Spencer had noted that such a device would be years away. However, this partnership with an external company shows that Microsoft is testing the waters and gathering player feedback before deciding to release its own first-party console.

Insiders suggest that the device will likely run a hybrid system, combining Xbox’s operating system with Windows, creating an optimized gaming experience similar to Valve's SteamOS. This approach reflects Microsoft's ongoing interest in enhancing its gaming ecosystem while ensuring seamless portability.

In addition to the handheld console, Microsoft is also focused on the next-generation Xbox console, which will eventually replace the current Series X/S models. However, reports indicate that fans will have to wait until 2027 for the next-gen console’s release. It's possible that the handheld device could launch around the same time, as Microsoft looks to offer a comprehensive gaming experience for all types of players.
