iPhone Supplier Murata Explores Supply Chain Shift to India
By MYBRANDBOOK
Murata Manufacturing’s exploration of a supply chain shift to India highlights the country’s rising prominence in iPhone Production and the broader Apple Supply Chain.
iPhone components maker Murata Manufacturing Co. is weighing whether to move some of its production capacity to India, reflecting a global realignment of the supply chain toward the world’s most populous country. This move aligns with the growing trend of Made in India initiatives, aimed at strengthening local manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependence on China.
The Kyoto-based maker of Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) sees growing demand in India and is running simulations for what it would take to dial up its pace of investment there, according to Murata President Norio Nakajima. Murata’s components are found in almost all electronics, from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. smartphones to Nvidia Corp. servers and Sony Group Corp. game consoles. The company has also helped put a NASA helicopter on Mars.

As Apple continues to expand its presence in India, Murata’s interest in local India Manufacturing signals a strategic shift that could benefit both companies. India has emerged as a significant player in the Apple Supply Chain, with Apple’s contract manufacturers such as Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron ramping up production within the country. By encouraging suppliers like Murata to establish a footprint in India, Apple aims to enhance its supply chain resilience and take advantage of government incentives under the Made in India initiative.
Government Incentives: India’s production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes are attracting global electronics manufacturers.
Supply Chain Diversification: Reducing dependence on China due to geopolitical tensions and disruptions.
Expanding Market: India is one of the fastest-growing smartphone markets, making it an attractive location for component suppliers.
Labor and Infrastructure: The country offers a skilled workforce and improving infrastructure for high-tech manufacturing.
If Murata sets up production facilities in India, it will strengthen the country’s position in the global Electronics Supply Chain. More suppliers moving to India could create a robust ecosystem that supports not only iPhone Production but also other consumer electronics. As Apple and its suppliers continue to invest in India Manufacturing, the Made in India movement is set to gain further momentum, solidifying India’s role as a critical hub for high-tech electronics manufacturing.
