Apple's collaboration with SpaceX enhances satellite connectivity on iPhones, with Starlink beta users gaining a new toggle in cellular settings to manage the feature
In a major breakthrough for iPhone users, Apple has teamed up with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and T-Mobile to bring Starlink satellite connectivity to iPhones. The companies have begun testing the service with a select group of users, who are part of T-Mobile's Starlink beta program. According to reports, those enrolled in the program received a message from T-Mobile informing them about the new service, which allows users to send text messages via satellite when traditional cellular networks aren’t available. The feature is available on iPhones running iOS 18.3, and users are encouraged to update their devices to start using the satellite messaging option.
Although Apple already provides satellite connectivity through Globalstar, the collaboration with SpaceX takes this feature to the next level. iPhones enrolled in the Starlink beta will have a new toggle in the cellular data settings to manage their satellite connectivity. When users find themselves in remote areas where cellular signals are unavailable, the device will attempt to connect to SpaceX's Starlink satellites, enabling them to send text messages and even reach emergency services via satellite.
Currently, the Starlink satellite service supports text messaging only, but there are plans to expand the functionality to include voice calls and data in the future. While T-Mobile is conducting its Starlink tests on iPhones, the company has also introduced the satellite service for premium Samsung devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy S24 series. Furthermore, the beta program is now open to smartphones running Google’s Android 15 OS, increasing the range of compatible devices.
The Starlink network operates through a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, offering fast internet speeds and low latency. This system bypasses traditional ground infrastructure, making it ideal for remote areas with limited or no cellular coverage. As the service expands, Starlink promises to deliver improved connectivity for millions of users worldwide, further disrupting the way satellite and mobile networks operate. T-Mobile has confirmed that once the service is fully launched, it will support a broad range of modern smartphones, enhancing global communication capabilities.
