RS Sharma, Former Trai Chief, elected as ONDC Chairperson

RS Sharma, the former head of the National Health Authority (NHA) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), has been named as the non-executive Chairperson of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) council. He is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1978 batch who has had a remarkable career working for both the federal and state administrations. Sharma is recognised for spearheading changes and utilising information technology (IT).

The CEO of the NHA, he led the implementation of Ayushman Bharat and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). Furthermore, he also led the implementation of the CoWIN vaccination program.

ONDC is a government-backed network that aims to shift from a single platform model to a decentralized, interoperable network. It is supposed to resolve certain key problems present in the digital ecosystem, such as market dominance by large corporations and limited competitiveness of new sellers. It plans to help sellers be present on multiple platforms while porting their market reputation as well.

In simpler terms, platforms that are part of ONDC will show users products not just from sellers on the app but also from sellers on other platforms like Amazon, Meesho, and even local Kirana stores. Similarly, it will allow sellers to list their products on multiple platforms and also choose logistics and payment services independent of these platforms. The network will span across mobility, food delivery, hotel booking, and ticketing.
