Microsoft Edge for iOS and Android receives a new name

Microsoft allegedly changed the name of its Edge browser to "Microsoft Edge: AI browser" for iOS and Android. The company's goal of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into its products was in line with the renaming. Although the name change alone doesn't provide any significant AI enhancements, it did indicate Microsoft's intention to eventually improve Edge with AI capabilities.

Currently, it seems the only modification to the app is its name. Nonetheless, given Microsoft's recent enhancement of Copilot on Edge for mobile, nearly matching the desktop version's capabilities, the company likely saw this as an opportune moment to highlight the AI features of its browser.

"Microsoft Edge, your AI-powered browser, with Copilot built in to enhance your browsing experience. Empowered by GPT-4, Copilot enables you to ask questions, refine searches, receive comprehensive summaries and create images with DALL-E 3. Microsoft Edge is a smarter way to browse, find, create and shop on the go," the software major said in its updated App Store listing.

However, it should be noted that the name change didn't bring noticeable updates to its AI capabilities. Microsoft is likely to gradually introduce smaller AI tools to the browser, using the name change as a groundwork to shape consumer expectations. Regardless, Microsoft is signaling a significant focus on AI throughout its product line in 2024, and Edge is likely just the beginning.
