Nvidia allegedly stoles back its data hacked by ransomware group

Nvidia recently suffered a cyber-attack from a ransomware group called Lapsus$ that stole 1 TB of data from its Team Green, including personal information about employees and even some details about RTX GPUs.

In return, Nvidia attacked the ransomware group by remotely encrypting the stolen data and cutting off Lapsus$'s access to Nvidia's network. Lapsus$ further claims to have already made a copy of the stolen data, making Nvidia’s successful encryption attempt somewhat futile.

The group supposedly left one of its virtual machines enrolled in Nvidia's mobile device management program, which gave Nvidia a backdoor into its systems. It is said that Lapsus$ has leaked Nvidia employees' security details on Telegram, but that's yet to be verified.

Last year, Lapsus$ also took responsibility for a hack on Brazil's health ministry that involved national immunization program data being deleted and possibly stolen. Lapsus$ said it would return the data for a fee, but the Brazilian government claims not to have paid and instead recovered the data and rebuilt its systems independently a month later.
