Azim Premji retains India’s top philanthropist rank in FY21

Industrialist Azim Premji, the founder and chairman of Wipro has donated Rs 9,713 crore i.e. Rs 27 crore a day to maintain his top rank among Indian philanthropists in FY21. He has retained the ‘India’s Most Generous’ title.
As per the Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2021, Premji had increased his donation by 23 per cent during the last fiscal. The Azim Premji Foundation doubled its allocation towards the pandemic from Rs 1,125 crore to Rs 2,125 crore to expand work on vaccination across ten states, with a commitment to increase this further if the need demands.
Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani’s rating was enhanced to fifth with a Rs 183 crore donation with “societal pondering” being recognized as the first trigger.
HCL’s Shiv Nadar is at second place with contributions of Rs 1,263 crore towards upliftment causes. Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries came third on the list with Rs 577 crore contribution and was succeeded by Kumar Mangalam Birla with Rs 377 crore. The second richest Indian and Adani group chairman, Gautam Adani is eighth on the givers’ checklist with a donation of Rs 130 crore in the direction of catastrophe aid.
There are just a few new entrants into the record, together with the biggest shares investor Rakesh Jhunjunwala, who donated a fourth of his total earnings or Rs 50 crore in FY21 with efforts on training.
“At present, a lot of the cash goes to basic elements like training and healthcare due to the necessities on the bottom. Nilekani has certainly made fascinating contributions, and in 10 years, we may have broader civil society points function as major causes,” Hurun India’s managing director and chief researcher Anas Rahman Junaid stated.
