Wipro shines on a $700 mn deal from Metro AG
By MYBRANDBOOK
Wipro has won a strategic digital and IT partnership deal from global wholesaler METRO AG, valued at $700 million for the first 5 years. It could extend to an additional 4 years, with a potential spend of up to $1 Billion, making it the biggest deal win since Thierry Delaporte took charge as CEO a few months ago.
Wipro will take over the IT units of METRO AG — METRO-NOM GMBH in Germany and METRO Systems Romania S.R.L. This partnership will employ 1,300 plus employees across Germany, Romania and India will transfer to Wipro.
“METRO AG is focused on leveraging digital transformation for competitive advantage. Wipro’s role is to make that transformation efficient and effective. Equally important for us is welcoming 1,300 new colleagues to Wipro and ensuring this move is positive and empowering for each of them," said Wipro CEO Thierry Delaporte.
At the same time, METRO AG CIO Timo Salzsieder said, "Partnering with Wipro allows us to simplify and streamline our IT landscape, and critically gives us access to innovation and the best digital practices."
Wipro further plans to launch a Digital Innovation Hub in Düsseldorf, Germany to support METRO and other clients in the region.
Wipro chairman Rishad Premji has been bullish about the software major's prospects, days after it undertook a significant reorganisation to simplify operations.
Wipro CEO Thierry Dealporte, who took charge in July, announced a mega restructuring exercise recently in an effort to simplify the operating structure and drive better outcomes. As part of this, Wipro will replace the current structure of seven Strategic Business Units, Service Lines and nine geographies with four Strategic Market Units (SMUs) and two Global Business Lines (GBLs). These changes will be effective from January 1, 2021.
"There is a great sense of optimism, for the industry and for Wipro. The new CEO is the right leader to take us forward. You will see an obsession for growth, much stronger external market orientation. We will drive simplicity over perfection with a nimble structure. I'm confident that you will see a bolder Wipro, that's not afraid to shake the apple cart," Speaking to analysts last month on Wipro's first analyst day in five years and the first since he took charge as chairman 15 months ago, Premji said.
