Android founder reveals new long, thin smartphone that resembles walkie-talkie

Android Co-founder Andy Rubin took to Twitter to unveil his startup Essential's new 'Project GEM' smartphone. Sharing the images of the elongated phone in multiple colours, with a tall UI composed of card-like apps, Rubin wrote, "New UI for radically different formfactor." He also shared a video of the device with 'colour-shift' material that changed shades from different angles.

 

Andy Rubin took to Twitter to unveil his startup Essential's new 'Project GEM' smartphone. Sharing the images of the elongated phone in multiple colours, with a tall UI composed of card-like apps, Rubin wrote.

 

* The New UI for radically different form factor. He also shared a video of the device with 'colour-shift' material that changed shades from different angles. Gem is too narrow for a traditional keyboard and will likely be voice-controlled and it has shown in four glossy color-shifting hues.

 

The phone features an unusually long and thin design that appears more like four smartwatch faces stacked on top of each other. No release date was announced for the Gem, but it is confirmed to begun early testing outside of lab environment.


 


'Project Gem' is the second product developed by Rubin and Essential, the tech company he founded after leaving Google 2014.
