World Telecommunication Day observes serious need for standardisation to accelerate the digital transformation

World Telecommunication Day observes serious need for standardisation to accelerate the digital transformation journey of India. Sumeet Walia, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Tata Communications says, bridging the standardisation gap’, as the theme for World Telecommunication Day, creates an increased awareness on the importance of international standardisation. The priority for any business today is digitisation and we have certainly seen a transformation taking place in the country. However, the harsh reality is that the sector remains vulnerable in adopting new technologies and a quick response mechanism to address customer needs. A lack of standardisation and a clear road map of the digital journey continue to be the primary roadblocks for every enterprise. The investments in implementation to managing and upgrading key technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence and the roll out of 5G can dramatically come down if standardisation becomes a guiding principle.
Keeping this in mind and to address this challenge, in partnership with CII, we recently introduced a Digital Maturity Appraisal tool. The tool aims to help Indian industries navigate today’s business landscape as they undergo rapid changes led by digital technologies which are transforming the way systems, processes and people work. This will provide participating organisations the ability to benchmark their current level of digital operations against the national average of their industry peers, thereby improving the efficiency of their service delivery and set standards of excellence.
The adoption of 5G is also going to be critical to fully realise the vision of a mobile-first, connected world. The recent TRAI workshop on enabling 5G is a testament to India’s step towards addressing the standardisation and regulatory concerns on the next generation technologies.”
