UP Police Files FIR Against Facebook Over Fake ID Impersonating IPS Officer

The case, filed on February 22, 2025, was registered under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act, 2008, which deal with identity theft and online fraud.

In a significant move against Facebook identity fraud, the Uttar Pradesh Police (UP Police) has filed an FIR against Facebook for failing to take action against a fake profile impersonating an IPS officer. The case has sparked widespread concerns over social media security, online impersonation, and legal responsibility for tech giants in handling fraudulent accounts.

Facebook Impersonation Case: A Threat to Public Trust

The controversy erupted when a fake Facebook account impersonating an IPS officer surfaced online, misleading users and potentially being used for unlawful activities. Despite repeated complaints, Facebook allegedly failed to remove the fraudulent profile, prompting the UP Police to take legal action against Facebook.

The cyber police have registered an FIR under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act. The Cyber Crime Police Station in Balrampur has registered a case against an unidentified individual for creating a fake Facebook account in the name of a police official and using it to deceive the public.

The case highlights the growing problem of social media impersonation, where fake accounts are used to spread misinformation, exploit users, or commit cyber fraud. With the UP Police FIR against Facebook, authorities aim to hold the social media platform accountable for its role in allowing the spread of fake profiles and identity fraud. This case raises serious questions about Facebook’s moderation policies, data protection measures, and its responsibility in preventing impersonation cases.

The fake account investigation is expected to bring more scrutiny on social media companies regarding their mechanisms to detect and remove fraudulent accounts impersonating government officials and law enforcement personnel. Legal experts believe this case could set a precedent for future actions against tech platforms that fail to address cybersecurity concerns effectively.

With rising concerns over online identity fraud, social media companies may face increased pressure to implement stricter verification and content moderation policies. Meanwhile, the UP Police’s legal action against Facebook reinforces the urgent need for stronger digital laws and enhanced cybersecurity measures to protect citizens from online deception and fraud.
