Russia develops free cancer vaccine amid Ukraine war
By MYBRANDBOOK
In a major breakthrough in cancer treatment, Russia has developed an mRNA-based vaccine aimed at treating cancer patients. Set to be launched in early 2025, the vaccine will be distributed free of charge to Russian citizens, as reported by state media outlets.
The vaccine is personalised, using genetic material from a patient’s own tumour, and will cost the Russian government around 300,000 rubles (USD 2,869) per dose. Andrey Kaprin, head of the Radiology Medical Research Centre under the Ministry of Health, clarified that the vaccine is designed to treat existing cancer rather than prevent tumour development.
Alexander Gintsburg, director of the Gamaleya National Research Centre for Epidemiology and Microbiology, explained the sophisticated production process, which includes the use of AI and neural network computing to accelerate the creation of customised mRNA vaccines. This technology reduces the time needed to develop a personalised vaccine to under an hour.
The vaccine works by training the immune system to target cancer cells. It does so by identifying antigens specific to the cancer cells, prompting the body to produce antibodies that can recognize and destroy the tumour.
Cancer rates in Russia have been rising in recent years, with over 635,000 new cases reported in 2022, particularly among colon, breast, and lung cancer patients.
This Russian development is part of a global effort to create personalised cancer therapies. Similar initiatives are underway in the United States and the United Kingdom, where early trials of personalised vaccines for glioblastoma and melanoma have shown promising results.
