YouTube starts testing Premium Lite subscription

Popular video streaming platform, YouTube is now testing a new premium lite subscription with fewer ads at half the price of the full-fledged premium subscription. However, there is no confirmation if YouTube Premium Lite will also be available as an annual subscription plan.  YouTube Premium Lite will reportedly cost $8.99 a month, almost 50 per cent cheaper than the regular premium plan priced at $16.99. If a user subscribes on iOS, he/she will be charged a heftier $11.99, presumably to give Apple its cut on the App Store.

This update Premium Lite plan is being tested in Australia, Germany, and Thailand. Google previously offered Premium Lite in a few markets in Europe, which was similar in its limitations on extra mobile features but actually was ad-free. But that got axed a year ago.

Advertising has become almost inescapable on YouTube since Google started offering the expensive Premium option to get rid of it. Premium Lite could presumably continue to evolve during this “testing” period, and it might even be cheaper by the end. Google does understand that ad blockers are a lot cheaper, though the tech giant is trying its hardest to make those less effective as well.
