'Laapataa Ladies' is India's official submission to Oscars 2025

Selected from 29 films by a 13-member jury, Laapataa Ladies, currently streaming on Netflix, has been well received by critics as well as audiences

In what may be called a big achievement for filmmaker Kiran Rao, whose directorial venture Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India's official entry in the Best Foreign Film Category for the Oscars 2025 by the Film Federation of India. Based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami, Laapataa Ladies is currently streaming on Netflix after garnering a stunning success at the box office.

A light-hearted satire on patriarchy, Laapataa Ladies, starring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan, was picked from a list of 29 films, including the Bollywood smash 'Animal', Malayalam National Award winner 'Aattam', and Cannes winner 'All We Imagine As Light'.

The 13-member jury, led by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, unanimously selected 'Laapataa Ladies', produced by Rao and her ex-husband Aamir Khan, for consideration in the best international picture category at the Academy Awards. The list also included the Tamil film 'Maharaja', the Telugu titles 'Kalki 2898 AD’ and 'HanuMan', and the Hindi films 'Swatantraya Veer Savarkar' and 'Article 370'.

Although the movie opened to a slow start in March this year, it managed to gain the momentum at the box office following good reviews and mouth publicity.

Rao expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the selection committee and to everyone who believed in this film. “It is indeed a great privilege to be selected from among such amazing Indian films this year - who are equally worthy contenders for this honour,” she said, adding, “This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life.

Cinema has always been a powerful medium to connect hearts, transcend boundaries, and ignite meaningful conversations. I hope that this film will resonate with audiences across the world, just as it has in India,” Rao added.
