Google developed free tool to combat terrorist content on web platforms

Google launched a free tool called 'Altitude,' created by Jigsaw, to help tiny web venues deal with terrorist propaganda. The application gives users access to a central database of content classified as coming from terrorist organizations, which is maintained by the United Nations and backed by 'Tech Against Terrorism.' 'Altitude' intends to assist smaller platforms in detecting and removing terrorist content more efficiently.

The project is further working with the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, an industry-led group which was founded in 2017 by Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Yasmin Green, CEO of Jigsaw said, “Islamic State and other terrorist groups didn't give up on the Internet just because they no longer had the megaphone of their social media platforms. They went elsewhere. They found this opportunity to host content on file-hosting sites or other websites, small and medium platforms.”

‘Altitude’ will also provide context about the terrorist groups which the content is associated with.

Tech Against Terrorism platfrom has been working with more than 100 platforms, which include video-sharing platforms, messaging apps, forums and social media networks.
