DoT names four companies as auctioneers for next spectrum auction

According to a DoT circular, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will name an auctioneer on May 22 for conducting the next 4G spectrum sale, and has shortlisted four companies – mjunction services, C1 India, MSTC and e-Procurement Technologies – who have qualified in the technical round.

The auctioneer is the agency that will develop and manage the sotware for the upcoming spectrum sale. The auction is likely to happen within 90 days, post-finalization of the auctioneer.

A pure 4G auction is likely to benefit incumbents, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel, which want the 5G spectrum sale to be delayed, citing their stretched finances and an underdeveloped devices ecosystem. DoT officials, in turn, have reportedly said a 5G spectrum auction this year would have attracted few bidders, indicating the reason for the U-turn.

Some industry executives though say lack of clarity on whether Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE would be let to deploy this next-generation fast broadband technology in India prompted the government to postpone an auction of 5G airwaves in the 3.3-3.6 Ghz bands this year, and instead sell only 4G airwaves in the 700 Mhz, 800 Mhz, 900 Mhz, 1800 Mhz, 2100 Mhz, 2300 Mhz and 2500 Mhz bands.
