India’s First Homegrown Semiconductor Chip to Be Unveiled by October, Says IT Minister

India is on the verge of a significant breakthrough in the technology sector, as the IT Minister has announced that the first Indian chip will be unveiled by October.
Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw has said the first 'Made-in-India' chip will come out in September or October this year. Addressing the media in Bengaluru Vaishnaw said the government has granted Rs 334 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, for new R&D in gallium nitride, a technology in semiconductors, which is used in telecom and power.
This achievement marks a pivotal moment for the India semiconductor industry, further solidifying the country’s position in the global semiconductor market and boosting its Made in India technology initiative.
The unveiling of the Made-In-India chip is a testament to India's growing capabilities in chip manufacturing in India. For years, India has been a major consumer of semiconductor technology, relying heavily on imports. However, with the government's emphasis on Indian chip industry growth, domestic production is now becoming a reality.

The development of the Indian microchip is set to transform multiple industries by enhancing the domestic supply chain for Made-in-India electronics in the electronics and consumer goods sector, supporting the growing demand for smart vehicle technologies in the automobile sector, and strengthening India's position in 5G and artificial intelligence applications within telecom and AI.
The government has been actively promoting chip manufacturing in India through various incentives and policy initiatives. Under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, major investments have been made in semiconductor fabrication plants, research and development, and talent acquisition to support the industry. The government will soon come out with a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for components.
Additionally, collaborations with international semiconductor giants have facilitated technology transfer, helping India build a strong foundation for its Made in India technology initiative. This will not only reduce dependency on imports but also create employment opportunities and encourage innovation within the country.
The unveiling of the first Indian chip is just the beginning. With ongoing government support, technological advancements, and increased investment, India’s semiconductor future looks promising. The country is poised to become a significant player in the global semiconductor ecosystem, positioning itself as a manufacturing hub for high-quality Indian microchips.
As India moves towards self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing, the launch of the Made-In-India chip will serve as a catalyst for further Indian chip industry growth, paving the way for new opportunities in technology and innovation.
