PM Modi reiterates his vision to provide the world with a fully Made-in-India phone

At the ongoing India Mobile Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India has become a smartphone manufacturing hub, with the world now viewing the country as a “mobile exporter.”

During his inaugural speech, PM Modi said that while in 2014, there were only two mobile manufacturing units, today that number has grown to over 200. The prime minister also recalled that a decade ago, he laid out the vision of a digital-first India, aiming to lower the cost of phones which could only be achieved through domestic manufacturing.

Since the launch of “Make in India” initiative, the Centre has come up with different initiatives which includes the Production Linked Incentive Scheme and a range of tariff incentives. These inititives were introduced to help local and foreign businesses establish a presence in India and diversify away from China amid rising geopolitical risks.

India is emerging as a key hub for smartphone manufacturing, currently producing 14% of the world's iPhones, making it the largest producer outside China. Apple aims to raise this share to 24-25% by 2027-2028. Google has also begun manufacturing its high-end Pixel smartphones in India, and nearly all major smartphone brands now produce their devices in the country.

“We now aim to provide the world with a fully Made-in-India phone, from the chip to the finished product. We are making significant investments to create a semiconductor ecosystem,” he said.

Experts highlight India’s unique potential as a nation of 1.4 billion people with the capability to excel in manufacturing high-tech products like smartphones. The government aims to build a robust supply chain, following China’s model of becoming the world’s factory. While India has already succeeded in positioning itself as a mobile phone manufacturing hub, it also harbors ambitious plans to become a global leader in semiconductor production.

Currently, India’s semiconductor manufacturing industry is still in a very nascent stage. Taiwan is currently the world’s largest chipmaker, holding approximately 44 per cent of global market share, followed by China, South Korea, the US (6 per cent), and Japan, according to data from Taiwanese consultancy Trendforce.
