Google acquires Alter for $100 Mn

Tech giant Google has acquired Alter, an artificial intelligence avatar startup that was working on using AI to generate avatars for social media users and brands to express their virtual identity. Google bought the startup for around $100 million almost two months ago but neither company confirmed it.

However, a Google spokesperson recently confirmed the takeover. Reports say that Google will use the startup to improve its content game and compete with TikTok. The take-over came into light when Alter’s top officials updated their Linkedin profiles, revealing that they have joined Google.

Alter received $3 million in its first seed funding round from investors like Twitter, Roosh Ventures, and Play Ventures. Using plug-and-play tech innovation, Alter started as Facemoji and helped other game and app developers to put avatar systems into their applications. This could benefit Google, as the company has recently unveiled its custom emoji feature in chat.

In 2022, Google acquired a total of 8 companies. Apart from Alter, the rests are, Siemplify (a cybersecurity brand), Mandinant (another cybersecurity brand), Raxium (an AR hardware brand), Vicarious (AI/ Robotics software), MobiledgeX (Mobile Edge Computing Brand), BreezoMeter (Air quality monitoring brand), BrightBytes (Data & Analytics Brand).
