Meta to soon shut down Instant Articles on Facebook
By MYBRANDBOOK
Meta will be ending support for its Instant Articles format in the Facebook app next year, as part of a broader pullback from news-focused products. ‘Instant Articles’ was a mobile format to quickly load news articles on the Facebook app.
The company has told its media partners that Facebook will no longer support Instant Articles, and news publishers have six months to re-adjust their Facebook strategies. Meta is instead trying to make Facebook’s Feed function more like TikTok’s, focusing on algorithmic recommendations of content that users might like.
A company spokesperson said, “Currently less than 3 percent of what people around the world see in Facebook's Feed are posts with links to news articles. And as we said earlier this year, as a business it doesn't make sense to over invest in areas that don't align with user preferences.”
Recently, Meta also announced to shut down its newsletter product called Bulletin for creators and writers by early 2023. The company once launched a revamped News tab that included a dedicated local news section among other topics, including breaking news alerts.
