No Justice to the contract staff of BSNL, to go Hunger Strike

Hundreds of contract labourers of state run BSNL has staged a hunger strike at the the BSNL head office here on Tuesday demanding to clear salary arrears for the last seven months. The employees also demanded release of salary pay revision and revoke the proposal to fire 30% of the labourers in the name of voluntary retirement scheme.

BSNL Casual Contract Labour Union (CCLU) held talks with the General Manager regarding pending wages, but no decisive answer came forth. BSNL CCLU Secretary K. Mohanan, The GM says that the corporate office has not yet cleared the funds. The office has demanded a 30% cut in expenditure, which the administration here is trying to achieve by forcing the contract staff to retire. In the past few months, close to 2,000 contract staff have been asked to leave. We asked them to constitute a committee consisting of representatives of officers, permanent employees and contract staff to study how we can save on expenditure, and put on hold forced retirements until then. But the management has not heeded this suggestion. BSNL cannot be saved by throwing out contract staff, who play a key role in maintenance work. It can only be improved by expanding the service and providing services like 4G, which the Union government has not yet cleared for BSNL,” says Mr. Mohanan.

“The intention of the BSNL management is not right. They are demoralizing employees by not paying them the salary on time,” protesters alleged. “The salary is being delayed since February and we have not received the salary till September,” they claimed. While addressing the gathering, General Secretary of the federation CK Mathivanan alleged that the union government is not showing any interest over the state of contract labourers.

Hundreds of labourers from North Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Trichy, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Thirunelveli, Tuticorin and Coimbatore participated in the hunger strike urging to fulfil their demands. All India BSNL Officers’ Association district secretary S Kamaraj and functionaries from various districts participated at the protest.-Times of India.
