Workers at Samsung India plant in South India launches strike

Hundreds of workers at a Samsung Electronics plant in southern India have launched an indefinite strike demanding higher wages, partially disrupting production on Monday. This follows a four-day strike by Samsung's largest union in South Korea in August, where employees demanded wage increases and bonuses after negotiations with management broke down. Samsung employs under 2,000 workers at its Sriperumbudur plant near the city of Chennai which makes refrigerators and washing machines.

India's biggest consumer electronics company, Samsung counts the South Asian nation as a key growth market, where it competes with the likes of LG Electronics, turning out everything from televisions and refrigerators to smartphones.

The smaller of Samsung's two factories in India, which has been affected by a strike, produces electronic goods rather than the company's more famous smartphones. Nevertheless, it still accounts for 20% to 30% of Samsung's annual revenue of $12 billion in India, according to two sources familiar with the situation who requested anonymity.

Posters with the words "Indefinite Strike" went up outside the factory in Sriperumbudur near the city of Chennai, where hundreds of workers in company uniforms set up tents to shade them from the heat.

"We are striking for the second day," said union leader E. Muthukumar.
