ChatGPT to Introduce Break Reminders for Healthier, Balanced Conversations

The ChatGPT break reminder appears as a gentle prompt reading, “Just checking in. You've been chatting for a while — is this a good time for a break?”. Users can choose to pause or continue their session by selecting “This was helpful.” According to OpenAI, the company is still refining how and when these prompts appear to ensure they feel natural and non-intrusive.

Beyond break reminders, OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT’s emotional intelligence by introducing features that guide users through high-stakes personal decisions. Instead of offering direct advice on sensitive matters, such as relationship decisions, ChatGPT will now encourage users to consider pros and cons and ask reflective questions—helping them arrive at well-thought-out conclusions.

Additionally, OpenAI is developing tools for detecting signs of mental or emotional distress in conversations. This will enable ChatGPT to respond more empathetically and, when necessary, provide users with access to evidence-based mental health resources.

These improvements come after the US media reports criticized ChatGPT for being overly agreeable and producing inaccurate responses—a problem that emerged following an update to GPT-4o. OpenAI has since reversed this behavior and is committed to making ChatGPT more balanced, accurate, and supportive.

Looking ahead, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has teased the arrival of GPT-5, which will further enhance ChatGPT’s capabilities. The upcoming model will eliminate the model picker, allowing ChatGPT to autonomously select the best mode—whether reasoning or general response—streamlining the AI chatbot experience. With these updates, OpenAI reinforces its commitment to creating a safe, responsible, and user-friendly AI that helps people thrive in their personal and professional interactions.
