WhatsApp’s Writing Assistant to help users refine tone and clarity of chats

WhatsApp is testing a new AI-powered Writing Help Assistant that will allow users to polish messages before sending them, making communication more refined and effective. Introduced as a beta update for select Android users, the feature enhances tone, grammar, and structure while ensuring chats remain encrypted and anonymous. Similar to Gmail’s AI writing assistant, the tool generates improved drafts based on minimal user input. The assistant runs on Meta’s Private Processing system, which is fully encrypted and anonymous.

The assistant runs on Meta’s Private Processing system, which is fully encrypted and anonymous. This means that no original text, suggestions, or related data are stored or linked to user identities. On being enabled, users will see a pen icon in place of the sticker icon.

Tapping it triggers Meta AI to provide refinements. If ignored, the typed message remains unchanged on the device; if accepted, the request is processed securely, and suggestions are returned privately.

Users can select from multiple tones, including Rephrase for clarity, Professional for formal communication, Funny for lighthearted exchanges, Supportive for empathy, and Proofread to correct grammar and spelling.

With at least three suggestions are offered, senders can either stick with their original text or adopt an AI-enhanced version. Recipients will not be notified if a message has been AI-assisted.

Users may also provide quality feedback via in-app flags without exposing message content to WhatsApp or Meta.
