The new in-chat app directory lets users complete real-world tasks inside ChatGPT, while developers gain tools to build AI-native applications integrated directly into conversations.

OpenAI has officially launched a full-fledged app store for ChatGPT, allowing users to browse and use all available applications directly within the AI interface. The move also introduces an Apps SDK for developers, designed to help build “chat-native experiences” that extend the functionality of ChatGPT. Users can now perform tasks such as ordering groceries, creating presentations, or searching for apartments, all without leaving the chat. OpenAI emphasized that the strongest apps are intuitive, narrowly focused, and provide tangible value by completing real-world workflows or offering fully AI-native experiences.

How the app store works

The ChatGPT App Store, or app directory, can be accessed via chatgpt.com/apps or through the tools menu in the ChatGPT app. Unlike traditional app stores, apps run directly inside ChatGPT, summoned simply by mentioning their name. The platform now categorizes apps and connectors together—interactive applications as well as tools that retrieve and reference data from other sources like Google Drive. Existing functionalities remain unchanged, ensuring continuity for users. OpenAI is also developing features to recommend relevant apps within conversations based on user context, preferences, and usage patterns.

Developer opportunities and available apps

Developers can submit their apps through the OpenAI Developer Platform, where they will undergo review for quality and safety. Approved apps will gradually roll out in the new year. Current offerings in the directory include popular apps such as Spotify, Canva, DoorDash, Figma, Zillow, Booking.com, Expedia, and Apple Music, enabling tasks like playlist creation, project management, bookings, and shopping. OpenAI is also exploring monetization options for apps, including digital goods, further expanding the ecosystem for developers and users alike.

With this launch, OpenAI aims to transform ChatGPT from a conversational tool into a versatile platform, enabling seamless productivity and interactive experiences while fostering innovation through developer engagement.
