The revamped Aadhaar mobile application introduces offline identity verification, selective data sharing, and in-app updates for mobile numbers and addresses, aiming to reduce data misuse while simplifying access to Aadhaar services nationwide.

The Government of India has introduced a new Aadhaar mobile application designed to make identity verification and Aadhaar management more secure, convenient, and user-controlled. Rolled out by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the app seeks to address long-standing concerns around data privacy, misuse of Aadhaar photocopies, and the inconvenience of visiting physical enrolment centres for routine updates.

The new app allows users to access essential Aadhaar services directly from their smartphones, including offline verification and updates to personal details such as mobile numbers and addresses. Officials say the initiative is part of a broader push to strengthen digital trust while making Aadhaar usage safer for everyday scenarios.

Focus on privacy and offline verification

A key feature of the new Aadhaar app is offline verification, which enables identity confirmation without sharing Aadhaar numbers or biometric data. UIDAI has repeatedly warned against handing over physical copies of Aadhaar cards for routine checks such as hotel stays, office access, or SIM verification, citing risks of identity theft and data misuse.

With offline verification, users can confirm their identity even without an internet connection. The app allows individuals to share only essential information—such as name or age—based on the specific requirement, offering greater control over personal data and reducing unnecessary exposure.

Simplified updates for mobile number and address

The app also streamlines the process of updating Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers and addresses, a task that previously required visits to Aadhaar centres or lengthy online procedures. Users can initiate update requests directly through the app by authenticating their Aadhaar, entering new details, and completing verification steps.

A nominal fee applies for these updates, after which the request is processed and reflected in the Aadhaar database once verified. This move is expected to particularly benefit users whose registered mobile numbers are inactive or inaccessible.

Additional tools for families and secure sharing

Beyond verification and updates, the Aadhaar app introduces features aimed at everyday convenience. Users can create and manage up to five Aadhaar profiles from a single device, making it easier for families to handle Aadhaar-related needs for children or dependents.

The app also includes an Aadhaar contact card feature, allowing users to securely share limited contact details when required, without disclosing full identity information.

New compliance rules for organisations

Alongside the app launch, UIDAI has introduced a new requirement for organisations wishing to use offline Aadhaar verification. Entities such as banks, hotels, and service providers must now register with the government to access offline verification tools.

The move is intended to ensure accountability, prevent misuse, and enable controlled adoption of offline Aadhaar verification across sectors, reinforcing trust in India’s digital identity ecosystem.
