India’s traditional PC market posted its eighth consecutive quarter of growth, with shipments rising 3% year-on-year in the April–June period to 3.5 million units, according to new data from the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker.
IDC said growth was broad-based across categories. Notebook shipments, which dominate the market, rose 3% year-on-year, while desktops grew 0.2%. Workstations were the standout performer with shipments climbing 37% during the quarter, reflecting demand from specialized enterprise users.
At the same time, the market showed clear signs of price sensitivity. Shipments of premium notebooks priced above $1,000 fell 6.9% in the quarter, extending a slight decline in the first half of the year. Budget notebooks, particularly in the consumer segment, continued to gain ground.
AI Notebook Momentum
IDC reported strong traction for AI-enabled notebooks, with shipments surging 145% in the first half of 2025. Basic AI models led adoption, accounting for nearly 90% of AI notebook shipments. Analysts said this signals how AI capabilities are becoming a mainstream differentiator in India’s consumer and enterprise PC purchases.
Commercial vs Consumer Demand
The commercial segment remained the primary growth engine. Shipments rose 9.5% in Q2, with enterprise demand growing 21.2% year-on-year and more than 26% in the first half of 2025. Enterprises were driven partly by Windows refresh cycles, especially in large organizations and IT/ITES firms, IDC noted.
Consumer shipments, however, slipped 3.9% year-on-year, dragged down by stock availability issues and delayed vendor supplies. Still, underlying demand remained firm. “PC demand in the consumer segment remained strong across both online and offline channels,” said Bharath Shenoy, research manager at IDC India & South Asia. “But shipments dipped as older inventory was cleared during online sales and new supply was delayed. The focus was on keeping lean inventories ahead of Independence Day and festive season sales.”
E-commerce continued to play a role, with etail shipments up 1.6% in Q2 and nearly 12% in the first half of 2025.
Vendor Rankings
HP Inc. retained its lead with a 30.8% market share in Q2 and 29.9% in the first half. Strong enterprise demand supported growth in the commercial segment, but consumer shipments fell nearly 17% as HP pursued inventory corrections ahead of festive sales cycles.
Lenovo held second position with a 20.3% share. Its consumer shipments rose nearly 10%, driven by gaming notebooks and strong online demand, while commercial shipments surged 26% on the back of Windows refresh projects and small and medium business momentum.
Acer Group ranked third with 14.8% share. Consumer sales were buoyed by lower-priced models and expansion in offline retail, but a sharp decline in government orders dragged down its commercial performance.
Dell Technologies stood fourth with an 11.3% share, supported by double-digit growth in its commercial segment from enterprise and SMB customers. However, consumer shipments fell steeply, reducing its market share in that segment to just 2%, the lowest in recent years.
Asus rounded out the top five with a 7.7% share. It posted strong growth in the consumer market, fueled by gaming notebook sales, while its commercial segment also expanded 7.8%.
Market Outlook
IDC expects the second half of 2025 to remain strong, supported by festive season demand, government projects, and continued enterprise refresh cycles. “Windows refresh orders have gained momentum and are expected to continue driving growth in the enterprise segment,” said Navkendar Singh, associate vice president, Devices Research, IDC India, South Asia & ANZ.
He cautioned, however, that the recent U.S. tariffs on India could have knock-on effects, prompting enterprises to take a more cautious approach to IT spending. At the same time, large government programs such as the ELCOT education project are expected to provide a boost to commercial shipments.
“With consumer sentiment improving and brands preparing major campaigns around gaming and AI-powered PCs, the second half of the year looks promising,” Singh added.
