The upcoming feature will let WhatsApp users interact with Meta AI in a more controlled environment, where conversations are temporary and designed to prevent long-term data retention, strengthening privacy safeguards in AI-assisted communication.

WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a new feature called “Incognito Chat” that will allow users to interact with Meta’s artificial intelligence tools in a more private and controlled manner. The feature is aimed at addressing rising concerns around data security as AI becomes a regular part of daily communication.

The Incognito Chat feature is designed to give users the ability to have temporary conversations with Meta AI without leaving behind stored chat history. Once a session ends, the conversation will automatically disappear and will not be retained on WhatsApp or Meta’s systems.

The feature is expected to be particularly useful for discussions involving sensitive topics such as health-related queries, financial guidance, workplace issues, or personal conversations. By ensuring that chats are not stored, WhatsApp aims to offer users a safer space for more private AI interactions.

Meta has stated that the system is built on its “Private Processing” technology, which is designed so that even the company cannot access the content of these conversations. This adds an additional layer of privacy protection beyond standard encryption models.

The rollout of Incognito Chat is expected in the coming months and will be made available across WhatsApp and the Meta AI app in phases.

Growing focus on AI privacy tools

The introduction of this feature highlights the growing importance of privacy in the rapidly expanding AI ecosystem. As users increasingly rely on AI tools for both casual and sensitive tasks, demand for stronger data protection mechanisms has also increased.

Meta’s approach is positioned as an extension of familiar “incognito” concepts seen in web browsers, where user activity is not stored locally. However, the company claims its AI version goes a step further by ensuring that conversations are not accessible or retained by the platform itself after use.

While other companies have experimented with temporary AI chat modes, Meta is emphasizing a more restrictive privacy model that prioritizes non-retention of data as a core feature.

Alongside this development, WhatsApp is also working on a new capability called “Side Chat,” which will allow users to interact with Meta AI alongside ongoing conversations without disrupting the main chat interface. This feature will also use the same Private Processing system.

With these updates, WhatsApp is positioning itself to balance the growing demand for AI-powered convenience with stronger user privacy protections, as digital assistants become more deeply integrated into everyday messaging.
