The Tata Group has announced plans to invest over ₹1 lakh crore to develop a world-class AI-focused Innovation City near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport in Maharashtra. The announcement was made at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 in Davos.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said detailed planning for India’s first dedicated “Innovation City” will be completed within the next six to eight months. The project, being developed in partnership with the Tata Group and several international investors, aims to position Maharashtra as a global hub for artificial intelligence, semiconductors, data centres, and advanced digital technologies.
The proposed city will feature next-generation data centre infrastructure, research and development facilities, global capability centres, and innovation-driven ecosystems to support emerging technologies. Fadnavis noted that discussions around the project began at Davos last year and were further refined in consultations with Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran.
Highlighting sustainability as a core pillar, the Chief Minister said the project will incorporate a comprehensive circular economy model addressing water, air, and waste management. All forms of waste will be scientifically processed, with visible impact expected within two to three years. The model is intended to be replicated across other major Indian cities.
Fadnavis also announced the Raigad–Pen Growth Centre, which will be developed as a major business district, with investments worth ₹1 lakh crore already secured. At Davos, Maharashtra signed multiple agreements with global and Indian companies including Brookfield, ArcelorMittal, Essar, Skoda Auto, Volkswagen, STT Telemedia, Tata Group, Adani Group, Reliance, Bosch, CapitaLand, and Iron Mountain.
According to the Chief Minister, 83% of the MoUs involve direct foreign investment, with capital flowing in from 18 countries, reinforcing Maharashtra’s position as a leading destination for global technology and infrastructure investment.
