Samsung has expanded SmartThings support to Matter 1.5, becoming the first smart home platform to enable Matter-compatible cameras, while strengthening interoperability, security features and developer access across a rapidly growing ecosystem of connected devices.
Samsung Electronics has announced a major upgrade to its SmartThings platform with support for Matter 1.5, the latest version of the global smart home standard. With this move, SmartThings becomes the first smart home platform in the industry to support Matter-compatible cameras, significantly expanding its interoperability capabilities.
The update, scheduled to roll out later this month, will extend SmartThings’ existing Matter device lineup—currently covering lights, switches, door locks and sensors—to include cameras. Samsung said the expansion positions SmartThings as the platform with the broadest Matter device support available today, reinforcing its commitment to an open, standards-driven smart home ecosystem.
Matter 1.5 brings cameras and advanced controls
Matter 1.5, introduced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance in November, adds native support for cameras, alongside enhanced controls for closures such as blinds, awnings and garage doors, and improved energy management features. The inclusion of cameras is seen as a critical milestone, as they play a central role in modern smart home security and monitoring.
The standard supports a wide range of camera applications, including indoor and outdoor security cameras and video doorbells. Core features include live video streaming, two-way audio, motion alerts, event history and pan-tilt-zoom functionality, enabling consistent camera experiences across Matter-certified platforms.
Easier integration for manufacturers and developers
With Matter 1.5 support in SmartThings, camera manufacturers can now launch devices that integrate seamlessly without building custom APIs for the platform. Samsung said this simplifies development and shortens time to market, while offering consumers more choice.
Samsung has worked with global IoT brands such as Aqara, Eve and Ulticam to develop Matter-based cameras, with initial products expected to reach the market from March 2026. The company already supports camera integrations from partners including Aqara, Arlo, Hue and Ring across multiple protocols.
Expanding an open smart home ecosystem
Samsung said Matter camera integration will allow users to build more personalised smart homes, enabling use cases such as remote home monitoring, pet check-ins and automation routines linked to doorbells and sensors.
Through its Works With SmartThings certification programme, the platform now supports over 4,700 device models from more than 390 partner brands. Samsung added that its early adoption of Matter has helped bring dozens of Matter device categories into everyday smart home use.
