Highlighting India’s rapid digital transformation, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said electronics production has surged sixfold to ₹12 lakh crore and exports eightfold in 11 years, with India now emerging as the leading smartphone supplier to the US

Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced that India has become the leading supplier of smartphones to the United States, marking a milestone in the country’s fast-growing electronics sector. Speaking at the inauguration of metro projects in Bengaluru on August 10, Vaishnaw highlighted that India’s electronics manufacturing has expanded sixfold in the past 11 years, reaching a value of ₹12 lakh crore.

He further noted that exports of electronic goods have grown eight times during the same period, underscoring the country’s rising role in global supply chains. The announcement comes at a time when tariff-related disputes have put India–US trade relations under scrutiny, adding weight to India’s success story in electronics manufacturing.

Rapid growth in mobile manufacturing

According to official data, India is now the world’s second-largest mobile manufacturing hub. The sector, which in 2014 had only two mobile production units, now hosts more than 300 factories. This expansion has allowed India to achieve near self-reliance in mobile phone supply, with 99.2% of devices sold domestically manufactured within the country as of February 2025.

The value of mobile production has also surged dramatically — from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to ₹4.22 lakh crore in FY24. Vaishnaw pointed out that Karnataka’s Devanahalli has emerged as a significant hub for iPhone manufacturing, strengthening India’s position in the global smartphone ecosystem.

AI Mission and digital transformation

Vaishnaw also touched upon the India AI Mission, launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He said the initiative aims to make advanced technologies accessible to innovators across the country. As part of this effort, 34,000 GPUs have been made available as a shared computing facility at costs below $1 per hour, encouraging wider adoption of artificial intelligence.

Reflecting on India’s economic trajectory, the Minister recalled that in 2014, the nation was described as a fragile economy. Today, he said, India is recognized as a “bright spot” in an uncertain global environment, thanks to sustained reforms and investment in key sectors.

With rapid advances in both electronics manufacturing and artificial intelligence, India is positioning itself not just as a domestic hub but as a major contributor to global technology supply chains.
